City and Partners Celebrated the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of a New Community Serving Vulnerable Young Adults
August 25, 2023 -- Houston, Texas -- Mayor Turner, local elected officials, and community partners came together earlier today to celebrate the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of Sunrise Lofts, a brand-new community dedicated to supporting and empowering vulnerable young adults.
Sunrise Lofts (3103 McKinney Street) sits on approximately two acres in Houston’s EaDo district. The community includes one-bedroom studios and two-bedroom apartments for young adults who are vulnerable, high-risk, and homeless, including youth aging out of the foster care system. Amenities include a weight room, game room, library, open pantry, bike room, and a self-improvement educational and career center. Onsite staff and case managers are available to help provide residents with linkages to life skills training, educational opportunities, vocational and job skills training, childcare, health care, mental health, and other supportive services that encourage positive development.
The City of Houston proudly contributed $1.56 million of HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME) funds toward the nearly $23 million cost of this new construction.
“The City of Houston is proud to partner with Harris County and the Tejano Center to help young Houstonians overcome barriers and help them on their path to success,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Many young adults find themselves with housing insecurity, yet partnerships like we have with Harris County and the Tejano Center ensure no one gets left behind and that services are available to help Houstonians of all ages thrive.”
This development is a collaboration between the City of Houston, the Harris County Housing Authority, The Corporation for Supportive Housing, and The Tejano Center for Community Concerns.
For over 28 years, the Tejano Center has been providing a broad range of social, health, and educational programs addressing the pressing needs of Houston's East End community. The Tejano Center was established in 1992 and has operated the youth shelter and foster care program at 5300 Sunrise since the mid-1990s.
