New H-E-B Brings Fresh Produce to Third Ward Complete Community

December 19, 2019 – On Wednesday, December 18th, Mayor Turner and the Houston Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) joined Third Ward community leaders for an opening celebration for the new H-E-B MacGregor Market. The 90,000 square foot store will create more than 300 jobs and bring fresh produce and ready-to-cook meal options to the Complete Community.

Mayor Turner praised the leveraging of public-private partnership and encouraged similar future endeavors. “This store represents hope for people in other neighborhoods,” said Turner. “What we do here today, we will replicate in neighborhoods where there are food deserts and people in need of healthy options.”

The new store was developed through a collaborative effort utilizing $13 million in Economic Development Initiatives and Section 108 funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in addition to capital and partnership from H-E-B and the Houston Housing Finance Corporation (HHFC).

After a little over two years of experience engaging the community, H-E-B and the City of Houston welcomed community members to their new store with the sounds of Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul marching band. The store also features products from small businesses in the community. H-E-B awarded several community nonprofits with $5k each towards their mission and work in the area further supporting the ecosystem of public, private and nonprofit partnership for the betterment of residents.

H-E-B MacGregor Market opened to the public on December 18, 2019. Find more information on community projects at https://houstontx.gov/housing/public_facilities.html.
