Mayor Turner Breaks Ground on Affordable Master-Planned Community

November 14, 2019 – Mayor Turner, Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Davis, and Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) joined community members gathered in Northeast Houston on Tuesday to break ground on Towne Park Village. With homes priced from $179,000 to $222,000, the new master-planned community offers affordable single-family homes for Houston’s workforce and families in Northeast Houston. Many of the homes qualify for the City’s Homebuyer Assistance Program, which offers up to $30,000 in down-payment assistance to income-eligible first-time homebuyers.

Mayor Turner touted the development’s amenities, which include a daycare, parks and bus shelter, saying “Communities need more than homes to thrive and be complete, they need access to jobs, transportation, and quality education.”

Towne Park Village represents the progression of the City’s New Home Development Program, which provides newly constructed single-family homes for qualified low- and moderate-income homebuyers. Director Tom McCasland briefly discussed the impact of homeownership for communities saying, “Homeownership is one of the ways to begin to create wealth as a family.” He continued, “It brings the housing cost down and allows working families to send their children to college.”

Through partnership with the Houston Land Bank, Towne Park Development, LLC and Houston Public Works, 173 lots will be developed. Builders K.Hovnanian Homes and First America Homes will construct the homes on a little over 36 acres of land. Construction on Towne Park Village begins in January 2020. As of the ground breaking, 10 homes have already been sold to their future owners. “This is part of the vision that was displayed for our community,” said Jerry Davis, Vice Mayor Pro-Tem and Councilmember for District B. “Today we’re going to complete that vision.”
