Adult Sports, Recreation, & Leisure Classes
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s Adult Sports section manages a wide variety of recreational sports opportunities that let grown-ups play like kids-at-heart.
Each year, the office organizes more than 1,000 adult teams. Men’s, women’s and coed leagues are played during the winter, spring, summer and fall seasons, Monday through Friday, for a five-week doubleheader or 10-week single games at locations throughout the city. Additionally, water fitness classes are offered during the summer as a good form of cross-training for recreational athletes and individuals interested in enhancing their health and fitness levels. Houston Parks and Recreation Department provides opportunities to educate the general public about the use of leisure time, benefits, values, and positive impacts of leisure and recreation services. The presenter will review the many ways people can take advantage of better leisure by providing recommendations to participate in various leisure activities with HPARD that are either self-directed or leader directed at community centers, parks, aquatic centers, tennis centers, golf courses, skateboarding parks, sports facilities, trails, etc.Listed below are workshops offered on various topics related to the concept of leisure:
LEISURE, THE BASIS OF CULTURE
This workshop will present essential components of health and fitness that will enable a person to enhance quality of life to maximize better leisure. A discussion involving ancient Greek philosophy will differentiate common misconceptions about the idea of leisure and its relation to work, and that it is actually an attitude of mind and a condition of the soul that fosters receptivity to both physical and spiritual realities.

THE POWER OF LEISURE FOR ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT
The inherent characteristics of leisure (choice, enjoyment, and autonomy) make it a prime context for the development of adolescence. Based on recent research, structured leisure programming can play a key role in facilitating the transition from youth to adult, especially in identity development. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Adult Water Fitness: A combination of cardio, strength training and flexibility that takes you through a series of stations using effective circuit training principles and the latest aquatic equipment for a total body workout. Intensity: light to moderate.
Silver Splash: A water fitness class for mature adults to gently stretch, flex, tone and socialize in shallow water. Intensity: light.
Aqua Zumba: a class that combines high energy and Latin music with movement in the water, a combination that helps participants dance away their worries while staying in shape. Intensity: light to moderate
Adult Hydro Fitness Training: An athletic approach to water fitness training with sports-specific drills, intense cardiovascular work, intervals, balance/core training, martial arts, and plyometrics. It’s a great way to improve your cardiovascular conditioning, muscular strength, and endurance with minimal stress on your joints. Loud, rocking music is a part of the workout. Recommended as a great form of cross training. Intensity: moderate to hard.
