OVERVIEW
In 1993, the City of Houston purchased the former Quillian Memorial Center from the First United Methodist Church of Houston at a cost of $3.5 million and added it to the city’s park inventory. The park was originally called Southwest Park and later Quillian Park. In 1997, at the request of former Council Member Ray Driscol the park was officially renamed Alief Community Park, to reflect its community.
THREE DEPARTMENTS – ONE ROOF
On November 10, 2020, the Houston Health Department, Houston Public Library, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department held a groundbreaking ceremony on a first of its kind public facility designed to better serve the Alief Community.
The project was completed in the fall of 2022 and the Alief Neighborhood Center is scheduled to reopen on January 14, 2023. The new center will house three City Departments under one roof, the Houston Public Library, the Houston Health Department, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
