November 16, 2016 Public Meeting
A public workshop was held Tuesday 11/16/2016 for the Lower Westheimer Corridor Study, an enhanced pre-engineering study for Westheimer Rd./Elgin St. from Shepherd Drive to Main Street. The focus of the public workshop was to confirm project objectives and principles and to review conceptual options for the corridor.
Project objective: Lower Westheimer is an “urban main street” with an enhanced pedestrian experience. Lower Westheimer should support transit, improve access to local businesses, be aesthetically pleasing, preserve local culture and character, and manage traffic safely and effectively.
During the public workshop, four stations were set up. Each station represented one of the following segments of Westheimer Road: 1. Shepherd to Dunlavy, 2. Dunlavy to Montrose, 3. Montrose to Bagby, and 4.Elgin Street from Bagby to Main. Participants were given the opportunity to assemble and rearrange various right-of-ways (ROWs) elements, including vehicular travel lanes, parking lanes, bus lanes, turning lanes, sidewalks, trees, light poles, etc. and asked to create conceptual alternatives of the various segments. Factors that workshop participants were asked to consider included transportation mode priorities, limited right of way, lack of accessible pedestrian facilities, utility conflicts, major intersection operations, parking, driveways, and safety.
The table below includes information provided, concepts developed based on the participants’ input, and comments received during the workshop. Thank you for your interest in the Lower Westheimer Corridor Study!
