City Of Houston Celebrates The Grand Opening Of 900 Winston As Houston Continues To Add To Its Affordable Housing Inventory

July 21 2022 —A brand new apartment building at 900 Winston, Houston 77009, celebrated its grand opening Thursday, bringing 114 new high-quality rental homes for those 55 years and older to almost two acres in the Heights, minutes from shopping, amenities, and accessible transportation.

Located in the Heights, 900 Winston provides one- and two-bedroom units serving seniors from 30% – 60% of the Area Median Income, with 102 of the units designated as affordable.

“The new apartment community will provide high-quality amenities both inside and outside of the individual units,” said Director Keith Bynam, City of Houston Housing and Community Development department. “This benefits people who want to stay in their community or relocate to be closer to the benefits of the Heights.”

“We are pleased to welcome a new community serving people 55 years and older to a vibrant area of Houston,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This complex is a great example of the success we are having with Hurricane Harvey disaster recovery funds, and we remain dedicated to restoring and making whole those who lost so much to the storm.

Construction on 900 Winston was fully completed in May 2022 and is over 95% occupied already, with 110 units leased.

The community is within walking distance of a METRO bus stop, and close to a park, grocery store, and healthcare options. On-site amenities and services include a community dining room, pool, fitness center, and health and financial education.

The city proudly contributed over $11.2 million of Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR17) funds toward the $30 million cost of the construction for this community.

The City of Houston partnered with Magellan Housing and Royal American Development to construct 900 Winston. Magellan Housing is an established for-profit developer and consultant of affordable multifamily properties throughout Texas, including properties that the City has previously funded.
