Report a Blocked Crossing
If you encounter a blocked railroad crossing that is causing a public safety concern or significant traffic disruption, it is crucial to report it promptly. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is the primary agency responsible for tracking and investigating blocked crossing incidents.

To report a blocked railroad crossing:

When reporting, be prepared to provide:

  • The exact location of the crossing (street name and railroad line if known).
  • The date and time the crossing became blocked.
  • The approximate duration the crossing has been blocked.
  • Any identifying information about the train (e.g., train number, railroad company).
  • Report only once per incident

Your reports provide vital data that helps the FRA and local authorities identify problem areas and work with railroads to improve operations.

Regional Initiatives for Rail Safety & Traffic Impact Mitigation
The City of Houston is committed to working with our regional partners, including railroad companies and county agencies, to improve rail safety and reduce the impact of railroad activity on our communities. Our initiatives focus on several key areas:

  • Infrastructure Improvements: Investing in projects such as grade separations (overpasses/underpasses) and improved warning systems at crossings to enhance safety and traffic flow.
  • Data Analysis & Collaboration: Utilizing data from various sources, including public reports, to identify high-incident crossings and collaborate with railroad operators on targeted solutions.
  • Emergency Response Coordination: Working with local first responders to ensure effective protocols are in place for incidents involving railroads.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating residents and drivers on safe practices around railroad tracks and crossings.

We believe that through sustained collaboration and continuous improvement, we can make our railroad network safer and minimize disruptions for everyone in Houston.
