Announces the 2nd Annual Truck Art Contest

HOUSTON – February 26, 2024: The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department, in partnership with the Houston Independent School District, is thrilled to announce this year’s Truck Art Contest. Students are invited to submit art inspired by the theme ‘Reimagine: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.’ We encourage students to unleash their creativity and imagination for a chance to have their artwork featured on a Solid Waste Management collection truck.

The Truck Art Contest is open to K – 12th grade students registered in the Houston Independent School District. Art entries will be accepted between February 26 and March 8, and must be submitted in landscape orientation. File formats accepted are PDF, JPG, PNG, DOCX, and DOC. Students are allowed only one entry, and their original work must depict the journey of recycling and its importance in creating a sustainable future. To apply, a student must have a legal guardian submit the art piece at www.houstontx.gov/truckart.

"I was truly amazed and excited to see the incredible artwork submitted last year. Our judges faced a difficult task in selecting the winners from such outstanding creativity. I can't wait to see what inspired work we'll witness this year," said Mark Wilfalk, Director of the Solid Waste Management Department. "The Solid Waste Management Department is proud to continue the tradition of the Truck Art Contest and eagerly anticipates seeing the winners riding down the streets of Houston, showcased on the side of our Solid Waste Management truck.”

"Last year, I had the opportunity to see the most creative and innovative artwork from our students. I'm looking forward to seeing what this year brings. We love to celebrate the diversity of talents and perspectives that our students bring to their art. We also acknowledge the hard work and dedication that goes into creating meaningful and impactful art pieces. Good luck to all students!" states Stephanie Walker, Analyst II, Houston Independent School District.

Four winners will be chosen through a voting process with City staff, Council Members, and Houston Independent School District representatives. The Solid Waste Management Department will be announcing the winners at the City Council on May 7th to honor and celebrate the students.
