July 5, 2023 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a male at 6767 Bennington Street about 5:10 p.m. on May 26.

The suspect, Maurice Dewayne Smith, 17, is charged with murder in the 248th State District Court. A booking photo of Smith is attached to this news release.

He is accused in the death of Dearon Stout, 17.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives L. Patterson and N. Henderson reported:

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex at the above address and found Mr. Stout suffering from a gunshot wound.  Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.

A witness stated they saw an armed male exit a white Chevrolet sedan, heard gunshots and then saw the sedan flee the scene in an unknown direction.

Further investigation identified Smith as the suspect in this case and he was subsequently charged. Members of HPD's Northeast Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team arrested Smith on Monday (July 3) without further incident.
