February 28, 2023 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the death of a woman found in the 4400 block of Wilmington Street about 2 p.m. on Jan. 18.
The suspect, James Campbell, 57, is charged with tampering/fabricating evidence in the 338th State District Court. A booking photo of Campbell is attached to this news release.
The victim is identified as Leslie Obi, 43. An autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled her death as a homicide.
HPD Homicide Division Detectives J. Gardner and L. Brooks reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a report of female's body found in a wooded area near the above address.
Autopsy results released on Wednesday (Jan. 25) confirmed the victim was Ms. Obi and that she had suffered trauma to her body.
Obi was reported missing by family members on January 12. She was last seen at approximately 8 a.m. on January 11 and searches were conducted for her following her disappearance.
Further investigation indicated Obi was killed in an apartment at 9425 Scott Street. The apartment belonged to Campbell, who was an acquaintance and co-worker of Obi's. Following her death, Campbell tampered with her body and had it discarded. Homicide detectives consulted with the Harris County District Attorney's Office and Campbell was subsequently charged for his role in tampering with the body.
