Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 8320 Gulf Freeway
October 20, 2021 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 8320 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) that occurred about 8:40 a.m. on October 15.
The suspect, Tyrick Nelson (b/m, 20) is charged with capital murder in the 184th State District Court. A photo of Nelson is attached to this news release.
He is accused in the death of Carlos Iraheta, 55, who was transported to an area hospital.
HPD Robbery Division Sergeant G. Gonzales and Detectives B. Ells and J. Rachel reported:
Officers responded to a report of a robbery at a convenience store at the above address and found Mr. Iraheta had been shot. He was transported to a hospital where, on Sunday (Oct. 17), he was pronounced deceased.
Further investigation revealed Nelson entered the store and walked to the counter as if he was buying something. While at the front counter, Nelson pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot Iraheta, the store clerk, multiple times. A witness inside the store called 9-1-1 and a second witness saw Nelson run from the store and get into a black vehicle across the street.
Officers in the area were able to locate the vehicle and a short vehicle pursuit and foot chase ensued. During the course of the pursuit, evidence was recovered that linked Nelson to the shooting. Nelson was then taken into custody without further incident.
