January 22, 2021 - Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 7200 Kernel Street about 10:35 a.m. today (January 22).  

The identity of the deceased male is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.  

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Hall reported:  

HPD South Central Patrol Division officers initiated a vehicle pursuit on a black Chevrolet Malibu in the 4800 block of Old Galveston Road.  A male suspect driving the Malibu fled from officers at a high rate of speed.  As the driver traveled eastbound on Kernel Street, he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.  The driver was pulled from the wreckage and the vehicle then caught fire.  The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

As is customary when an individual dies in the presence of officers, this case is being investigated by the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
