Suspect Arrested, Charged in Incident at 9540 Richmond Avenue
December 21, 2021 - Charges have been filed against a robbery suspect arrested in a shooting incident at 9540 Richmond Avenue about 11 a.m. on Sunday (Dec. 19).
The suspect, Kamari John Miles (b/m, 40), is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 338th State District Court. A booking photo of Miles is attached to this news release.
A Houston police sergeant, J. Smith, discharged her duty weapon in the incident. No one was struck. Sergeant Smith, assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in September 2011.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant P. S. Buttitta and Detectives C. Walker, J. Moreno and J. Kosler reported:
Officers were dispatched to a robbery in-progress call at the shopping center at the above address. The responding sergeant arrived and discovered the suspect locked inside the location. From the call information, the sergeant had knowledge the suspect was armed with a knife. As a result, the sergeant gave the suspect verbal commands, but the suspect was non-compliant. A secondary officer arrived to assist the sergeant. The officer discharged his conductive energy device (CED) at the suspect in an attempt to detain him. The CED had no effect, due to the suspect’s heavy jacket.
When the suspect ran toward the sergeant and officer, the sergeant responded by discharging her duty weapon at the suspect. The suspect was not struck and ran from the location. After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was apprehended. He was subsequently taken to jail and charged.
As is customary when an officer discharges a weapon in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
