April 28, 2021 - Charges have been filed against a suspect who fired shots at Houston police officers and was then wounded by an officer at 5755 Bonhomme Road about 4 a.m. on Tuesday (April 27). 

The suspect, Kalum Gregory (w/m, 19), is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer in the 262nd State District Court.  A booking photo of Gregory is not available, as he remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg.    

HPD Officer T. Zhang, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Zhang was sworn in as an officer in January 2016 and is assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division.  

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant G. Rodgers and Detectives I. Ulloa, M. Resnick, J. Brown and S. Mohajer reported:  

While on patrol, Officer Zhang saw a suspicious gold Ford Taurus with its headlights off pull away from a dark commercial business at 9305 Harwin Drive.  The Taurus pulled onto Harwin Drive, headed eastbound at a high rate of speed, and then turned north onto Osage Street to a grassy dead end.  The driver of the Taurus then crossed the grassy field onto the main lanes of the Westpark Tollway where it immediately took the Fondren Road exit.  The Taurus travelled south on Fondren Road, east on Glenmont Drive and then south on Bonhomme Road. Officer Zhang caught up with the Taurus as it pulled into the commercial business strip center at 5755 Bonhomme Road.  Officer Zhang then activated his emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop.  

The driver of the Taurus pulled behind the business and stopped at a large alleyway.  The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Gregory, exited the vehicle.  Gregory then produced a black revolver and fired in the direction of Officer Zhang.  Gregory then fled on foot from the officer northbound through the alleyway, still armed with the revolver in his hand.  Officer Zhang pursued Gregory on foot.  

A second responding HPD sergeant was able to cut off Gregory as he fled northbound and that officer heard a single gunshot as Gregory got near him, but did not see Gregory fire the weapon.  Gregory then turned and ran back southbound to the front of the business where he took position in front of a store.  As Officer Zhang got near, Gregory pointed his weapon at him and fired a single shot, but did not strike Officer Zhang.  Fearing for his life, Officer Zhang discharged his duty weapon and struck Gregory in the leg.  Responding HPD officers provided medical assistance to Gregory until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital where he is expected to recover.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
