April 23, 2019 - Charges have been filed against two suspects arrested in an incident in which a Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable discharged his duty weapon at 4310 Gessner about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday (April 21).
The suspects, Ramon Alonso Martinez (H/m, 19) and Arthur Jess Villarreal (H/m, 20), are charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 174th State District Court. A booking photo of Martinez is attached to this news release. A booking photo of Villarreal is not available at this time, as he remains hospitalized.
The Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives R. Gonzales and E. Contreras reported:
A Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable, off-duty and in full uniform, was in his personal vehicle at the intersection of Gessner and Clay and saw four male suspects running into a gas station at the above address. The deputy saw the store employee raise his hands and appear to be the victim of a robbery. The deputy then saw the four suspects, armed with guns, run out of the store.
The deputy gave the suspects verbal commands to stop and saw one of the suspects carrying a long-barrel firearm. Fearing for his life, the deputy discharged his duty weapon at the suspect (Villareal) and struck him. The deputy then detained him and a second suspect (Martinez) at the scene.
Martinez was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged. Villareal was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso in an unknown condition. He was also charged for his role in the incident.
The two other suspects fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Trailblazer waiting nearby, driven by an unknown fifth suspect.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
