Investigation into Incident at 8700 South Braeswood

October 30, 2017 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which an HPD officer shot an armed suspect at 8700 South Braeswood Boulevard about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday (October 28).

The male suspect, 24, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.

Officer R. Foster, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Foster was sworn in as an officer in August 2016 and is assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Dillingham, Senior Police Officer L. Bailey and Officers J. Snook and M. Millington reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a disturbance with a weapon call regarding a male pointing a gun at a grocery store at 8650 South Braeswood and found a male matching the description of the suspect walking near 8700 South Braeswood.  Knowing the suspect was armed, officers gave him several verbal commands to get on the ground, which he ignored.  The suspect then reached behind his back into his waistband, at which time, officers saw a gun in his hand.  Fearing for his fellow officers' lives, Officer Foster discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect.  Officers recovered a gun from the suspect's possession and he was then transported by HFD paramedics to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
