UPDATE: Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 6300 South Sam Houston Parkway
March 2, 2017 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a juvenile female at 6300 South Sam Houston Parkway about 2 a.m. last Saturday (February 25).
The suspect, Jacobe Payton (b/m, 19), is charged with murder in the 240th State District Court in Fort Bend County.
A photo of Payton is not being released at this time, pending the ongoing investigation.
The victim, De'Maree Adkins, 8 years of age, was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.
HPD Homicide Division Detectives D. Stark and G. Sullivan reported:
Patrol officers responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of the South Sam Houston Parkway feeder road (Beltway 8) and Fuqua Street. When officers arrived, they learned that two to three vehicles were traveling at high rates of speed southbound on Fuqua. One of the vehicles, a Pontiac, was struck in the intersection by a black Honda Accord traveling eastbound on the service road. At some point after the crash, an unknown person opened fire on the Honda, striking DeMaree, who was in the vehicle with her mother. Paramedics transported the girl to the hospital where she died of her injuries. Her mother was not injured.
A vehicle that fled the scene is described only as a dark, four-door sedan.
Further investigation led to the identity of Jacobe Payton as the suspect in this case. He was taken into custody on Monday (Feb. 27) without incident and subsequently charged by the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office because the shooting took place in the Fort Bend County limits of Houston.
