Charges Filed Against Armed Suspect in Incident at 6300 Airline Drive
August 5, 2016 - Charges have been filed against an armed suspect who fired shots at Houston Police officers in an incident that occurred at 6300 Airline about 3:05 p.m. on Thursday (August 4).
The suspect, Jose L. Martinez (H/m, 34), is charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, felony evading arrest and felon in possession of a weapon in the 176th State District Court. A photo of Martinez is not available at this time.
HPD Officer S. Castillo, who discharged his duty weapon during this incident, was sworn in as an officer in April 2014 and is assigned to the North Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Officers I. Ulloa and E. Wohlgemuth reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a robbery in progress call and observed a silver pickup truck matching the suspect vehicle description. Officers attempted to stop the driver (Martinez) who instead fled at a high rate of speed.
After a brief pursuit, Martinez struck another vehicle in the 6300 block of Airline Drive. Martinez then exited the vehicle and fled on foot, holding a pistol in his right hand as he ran. The officers attempted to chase him on foot, at which time Martinez turned and fired several shots at the officers. Fearing for his and his partner's lives, Officer Castillo returned fire, however no one was struck during the exchange.
Martinez then attempted to hide and was eventually taken into custody by HPD patrol officers with the assistance of an HPD K9. Martinez was transported to the hospital for wounds sustained from the K9 during the arrest.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents within the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
