POLICE Department

Investigation into Shooting of Armed Suspect at 5900 Ledbetter

April 18, 2016 - The suspect, Marcus Lakeith Harris (b/m, 29) sustained at least one gunshot wound and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was treated and released.  Harris is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and aggravated assault of a family member with serious bodily injury in the 183rd State District Court.  A photo of suspect Harris is attached to this news release.

Officer R. Mesa, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Mesa was sworn in as an officer in September 2007 and is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. Smith and Senior Police Officer L. Lovelace reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a person down call at 6027 Ledbetter and observed both Harris, who was armed with a gun, and a female victim in the street.  Officers gave Harris repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon, which he ignored.  Harris then pointed his gun at officers and ran toward them, still pointing the gun in the officers' direction.  Fearing for his safety, and the safety of others around him, Officer Mesa discharged his duty weapon and struck Harris.  Harris was taken into custody and transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to the hospital.

Further investigation determined Harris assaulted the female prior to officers' arrival.  She was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where she was treated and released.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
