Suspects Arrested, Charged in Incident at 8400 Winkler Street
February 12, 2015 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which a Houston police officer discharged his duty weapon at an armed suspect who opened fire on the officer in the 8400 block of Winkler Street about 9:35 p.m. on Tuesday (February 10).
One male suspect, Orlando Montemayor (H/m, 27), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 263rd State District Court. A second suspect, Kelly A. Zamora (H/f, 22), is charged with misdemeanor theft in Harris County Criminal Court #11.
Photos of both suspects are attached to this news release.
Officer M. Moreno, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Moreno was sworn in as an officer in September 2011 and is assigned to the Eastside Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. Hassig and Officers T. Ferguson and I. Ulloa reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a home invasion in-progress call at the above address. As Officer Moreno arrived, he saw multiple vehicles fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed, and immediately initiated a pursuit of the first vehicle. At some point, the suspect's vehicle stopped and three male suspects exited. The driver and rear seat passenger ran to the left while the front seat passenger ran to the right. Officer Moreno then exited his patrol vehicle and pursued the suspect (Montemayor) running to the right of the vehicle.
As the officer pursued Montemayor, he turned toward the officer, pointed two pistols and fired one of them at the officer multiple times, but did not strike him. Fearing for his life, Officer Moreno returned fire, but did not strike Montemayor. Both the officer and Montemayor then exchanged gunfire a second time, but neither was struck. The suspect then placed both pistols on the ground and surrendered without further incident. Zamora was taken into custody at the scene of the home invasion. The other two suspects, believed to be males, remain at large. It was later learned a male victim had suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound during the home invasion. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.
The investigation is continuing.
Anyone with information on the identities of the two remaining suspects is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
