August 22, 2014 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man and the wounding of a woman at 1600 North Loop West (North Interstate Highway 610 West) about 11:20 p.m. on August 8.

The suspect, Justin Cruz Chavez (H/m, 22) is charged with murder in the 351st State District Court. He is accused in the killing of Jawanza Rooker, 20, of Houston, who died at the scene. The wounded woman, 19, was transported to an area hospital and later released.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Dillingham and Officers V. McLean, S. Overstreet and T. Colbert reported:

Mr. Rooker and a female friend attempted to drive away from the above location following a failed drug deal. At that time, unknown suspects followed them and fired several shots at their vehicle. Rooker, the driver, lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road into a median.

Further investigation and witness statements identified Chavez as the suspect in this case. He was taken into custody on Thursday (August 21) without incident.
