November 5, 2013 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 5734 Reed Road about 12:45 p.m. on November 11, 2012.
The suspect, Alvin Roy Thomas (b/m, 9-9-91), was charged today (Nov. 5) with criminal negligent homicide in the 182nd State District Court. He is accused for his role in the death of Jaque Fields, 18, of Houston.
A photo of Thomas is attached to this news release.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants B. Harris, M. McStravick and Senior Police Officers M. Waters and P. Vela reported:
An initial investigation indicated Mr. Fields and Thomas were friends sitting on the front porch at the above address comparing their pistols when Fields requested to look at Thomas' gun. Thomas said when he gave Fields the gun, Fields grasped the pistol and the weapon fired, fatally striking him.
In November 2013, investigators reexamined lab results and consulted with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, which confirmed Thomas' original account of events could not have occurred. Investigators reinterviewed Thomas and he stated he and Fields were smoking marijuana when he accidentally shot Fields.
