HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Francois and Senior Police Officer O. Lewis reported:
According to witnesses, three persons who had gotten off a METRO bus were standing on the shoulder of the road and attempted to cross Hempstead Highway. The driver of a black Chevrolet Malibu traveling on Hempstead saw two of the pedestrians cross in front of her. When she looked back at the roadway, she saw the third pedestrian suddenly in front of her vehicle. Having no opportunity to stop, the Malibu struck the pedestrian. A second vehicle of unknown make or model struck the victim in the roadway, but did not stop. The driver of the Malibu remained at the scene and attempted to provide medical assistance to the victim. HFD paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident. The investigation is continuing.
