September 7, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of one man and wounding of another at 5903 Glenmont #193 about 5:45 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 4).
The suspect, Nestor Javier Landaverde (H/m, DOB: 6-15-87), is charged with murder in the 178th State District Court. He is accused in the death of Roberto Melgar, 33, of Houston. Mr. Melgar suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second male suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R.A. Odom and Officer M. R. Coleman reported:
Mr. Melgar and three friends were drinking and playing cards inside an apartment at the above location, when they heard a gunshot outside the residence. An unknown male suspect, armed with a gun, then forced open the door of the apartment and fired several shots, fatally striking Melgar and wounding one of his friends. The suspect fled the scene. Melgar's friends then called 9-1-1.
Further investigation and witness statements identified Landaverde as the suspect in this case and on Monday (Sept. 5) he was arrested on an unrelated warrant. Landaverde admitted to investigators his involvement in the shooting.
