November 9, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal hit-and-run traffic accident at 3800 Broadway about 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 31.
The suspect, David Cruz (H/m, DOB: 1-3-91), is charged with accident involving injury or death in the 176th State District Court. A photo of suspect Cruz is attached to this news release.
The victim, Anthony Story, 17, of Houston, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Thomas and Officer T. Hines reported:
HFD personnel responded to a reported injured male at the Las Palmas Apartment complex at 7900 Stone. Upon arrival, they observed a green Hyundai Sonata with severe damage to the right side of the vehicle. Mr. Story was observed lying down in the back seat, in need of medical attention, and was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital.
A preliminary investigation determined there were three other occupants in the Hyundai and the vehicle had struck another vehicle in the 3800 block of Broadway earlier in the morning. It was later determined all three occupants of the Hyundai were transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Further investigation and witness statements identified Cruz as the driver (suspect) in the hit-and-run accident on 3800 Broadway and on Monday (Nov. 7) Cruz turned himself in to police.
