HPD Officers to Help Children Affected by Violent Crime

December 2, 2011 - Houston police have learned the identity of an armed male suspect fatally shot by a HPD officer at 4506 Sherwood about 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 30).


The suspect is identified as Adam Garza (H/m, DOB: 2-26-92). He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who discharged his duty weapon, A. Chapa, was not injured. Officer Chapa, assigned to the North Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in May 1992.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant K. Deese and Senior Police Officer B. Oxspring reported:

An undercover officer with a HPD Tactical Unit was sitting in an unmarked city-issued vehicle performing surveillance in the parking lot of the apartment complex at the above address. Garza approached the vehicle from the passenger side with a semiautomatic pistol in his hand. Garza opened the passenger side door and attempted entry into the vehicle. The undercover officer discharged his duty weapon several times, striking Garza. Paramedics were called and pronounced Garza deceased.

As is customary in cases in which an HPD officer discharges a weapon causing any type of injury, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
