Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Stabbing at 219 West Alabama

October 22, 2010 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal stabbing of a male at 219 West Alabama about 8:50 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 16).

The suspect, Varney Eugene Brown, Jr. (b/m, DOB: 11-26-79), is charged with murder in the 248th State District Court. He is accused in the death of Matthew Helfrich, 42, of the above address.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants K. Deese, K. McGray, R. Odom, Senior Police Officer L. Lovelace and Officer N. Wackman reported:

Mr. Helfrich was seen and heard arguing with several unknown males. At some point during the argument, he was stabbed. The suspects then fled on foot. Helfrich was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he died.

Further investigation led to the identity of Brown as the suspect who stabbed Helfrich. On Wednesday (Oct. 20) Brown was arrested and charged in this incident.
