March 25, 2010 -
Houston police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a suspect wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of a child and the wounding of another at 1351 Greens Parkway about 1:20 p.m. on Sunday (Mar. 21).
The suspect is identified as Jonathan Hunter (b/m, DOB: 6-17-90). Hunter, who has an alias of “Jonathan Barnes,” has not been charged at this time. A photo of Jonathan Hunter is attached to this news release. His hair has since been cut shorter than depicted in the photo.
Another suspect, Alton Charles Barnes (b/m, DOB: 8-5-85), is charged with capital murder in the 183rd State District Court and is currently in custody.
Charissa Powell, 3, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Willowbrook Methodist Hospital where she was pronounced dead.. A second victim, a 1-year-old boy, was wounded by bullet fragments. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with non-life threatening wounds and was treated and released.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Roberts and Senior Police Officer R. Cervantes reported:
The victims’ father told police that he, his wife, and the two children were getting into their car at an apartment complex on Greens Parkway when they were approached by the first suspect who demanded the keys to the vehicle. The father reported that he initially thought it was a prank, but then tried to get his family out of the vehicle. While he was doing so, the first suspect began firing at the father, who fled on foot. One bullet struck the female child in the chest.
The father said he managed to get into his vehicle as the suspect fled to one of two waiting cars. The father drove out of the apartment complex, seeking help for his children, and flagged down a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy in the 2600 block of the North Sam Houston Parkway service road. The deputy called for EMS personnel who transported both victims to local hospitals.
Further investigation developed information that identified Alton Barnes as a suspect in this case and, on Tuesday (March 23), he turned himself in to police without incident.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Jonathan Hunter is urged to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
