HPD Officers Roll Up Sleeves to Ready Food for Those in Need
December 14, 2010 - Houston police officers and dozens of volunteers today began packing food supplies collected during the HPD's Comida (food) drive and earmarked for those less fortunate this holiday season.
Photos of the officers and volunteers working and unloading pallets of food at the Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. Plant at 9300 La Porte Freeway are attached to this news release and available for media use.
Thanks to the generosity of the Houston community, food and monetary donations were collected by HPD officers stationed at Fiesta Mart locations during the police department's 25th annual Comida Drive.
The Comida drive began 25 years ago, in December 1985, with an officer's concern for the less fortunate citizens of Houston. That began what is now one of the largest food drives in the city of Houston. During its first year, approximately 600 families received a box of non-perishable food. Each donated box fed a family of four a holiday meal. The food drive now provides food for more than 3,500 families throughout the city of Houston.
