Charges Filed Against a Suspect Who Assaulted a Police Officer at 5800 Shady River May 4, 2009 - Charges have been filed against a suspect who shot at a Houston police officer at 5800 Shady River about 4 a.m. on Sunday (May 3). The suspect, James Michael Beattie (w/m, DOB: 2/01/1959), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 351st State District Court. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. H. Roberts and Senior Police Officer S. R. Straughter reported: Off-duty Houston police officers, working an approved extra job, were conducting surveillance in a neighborhood where a number of burglaries had recently occurred. About 4 a.m., officers observed a man fitting the description of a suspect in previous burglaries walking in the 5800 block of Shady River. Officers attempted to detain the suspect, who ran behind one of the houses. As officers followed, the suspect produced a pistol and fired at the officers. A bullet struck the driveway then ricocheted striking Senior Police Officer E. Termeulen and causing a minor wound to his forearm. The suspect continued to run and was arrested about 5:45 a.m. KJS/JC
