HPD Officers, Volunteers to Pack Food For Needy Houstonians December 15, 2009 - At 9 a.m. TOMORROW (Wednesday, Dec. 16), nearly a dozen Houston police officers will be joined by numerous volunteers packing food supplies to be distributed to those less fortunate this holiday season. The event will be held at the Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. Plant at 9300 La Porte Freeway. Thanks to the generosity of shoppers, food and monetary donations were collected by HPD officers stationed at Fiesta Mart locations throughout Houston during the police department’s 24th annual “La Comida” Food Drive. The “La Comida” food drive began in December 1985 with Officer Joe Dominguez’s concern for the less fortunate Hispanic citizens of Houston. Dominguez put together what is today one of the largest food drives in the city of Houston. During its first year, approximately 600 families received a box of non-perishable food. Each box donated fed a family of four during the Christmas holidays. The food drive now provides food for more than 3,500 families in the city of Houston.
