Arrests in 2006 Murder at 8935 Veterans Memorial Drive April 22, 2008 - Charges have been filed against one suspect and are pending against another in the fatal shooting of a store owner at 8935 Veterans Memorial Drive on June 15, 2006. Kevin D. Chaney (b/m, DOB: 5/29/77) is charged with capital murder in the 339th State District Court, while the same charge is pending against the shooter, Charles H. Jones (b/m, DOB: 5/24/76). They are accused in the killing of Thi Viet Nguyen, 49, of Houston, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W.P. Booth and Officer A.D. Brown reported: Chaney and Jones entered the Happy Food Store at 8935 Veterans Memorial Drive dressed in all black with their faces covered. Jones pointed a gun at Mr. Nguyen while Chaney grabbed Nguyen's wife and forced her to the cash register. After she opened the register and safe, Chaney began going through the contents of each. At the time, the couple's 11-year-old son, who was also in the store, ran from behind the counter. When Jones and Mr. Nguyen started arguing, Nguyen's wife heard two gunshots. The suspects took money and cigarettes before leaving the store in a white car with no license plates. Paramedics were called and pronounced Mr. Nguyen dead at the scene. Witnesses followed the suspects and found their vehicle abandoned several blocks away. Officers recovered the vehicle and found it had been stolen in a previous robbery. During the course of the investigation, officers identified the suspects through DNA evidence recovered at the scene that matched Jones. Chaney admitted his involvement in the capital murder when he made a statement to officers while he was serving time in the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) on an unrelated charge. Chaney was arrested last Thursday (April 17) at a relative’s house in the 1600 block of West Donovan. Jones is currently in the TDC charged in an unrelated case and will be brought back to Harris County to stand trial for his involvement in this case. Update: GO/JFC |
