Update On Incident at 6555 West Bellfort October 11, 2007 - Charges have been filed against two suspects arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 6555 West Bellfort about 5 a.m. on August 26, 2007. Wendell Lane Champion (b/m, DOB: 4-27-86), and Prinston Mortel Williams (b/m, DOB: 2-14-88), are charged with capital murder in the 228th State District Court. Both are accused in the killing of Luis A. Ayala, 57, of 6114 Renwick #124B. Ayala, a security officer at the location, suffered a gunshot wound to leg and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he later died. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant B. E. Roberts and Officers M. F. Waters and J. Sosa reported: Champion and Williams entered the business and assaulted and shot Mr. Ayala before they robbed an employee at gunpoint. Champion and Williams fled the scene with a large amount of cash. Ayala was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A follow-up investigation identified Champion and Williams as suspects in this case. They were arrested on Monday (October 8) at their respective residences without incident.
