Traffic Incident at 5600 Airport
September 28,
2006 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic
accident in the 5600 block of Airport about 8:40 a.m. today (
September 28).
The identity of the deceased victim is pending
verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office. Two
other victims were seriously injured in the accident.
HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant
M.W. Bearden and Officers
D. Harwell and J. Brashier reported:
A witness reported seeing two vehicles, a 1995
Suzuki and a 2002 GMC, traveling westbound on Airport at a high
rate of speed. The vehicles continued on Airport and prior to
reaching Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, they crossed over a
small bridge and over a hump in the roadway. The driver of the
Suzuki, after going over the hump, lost control of the vehicle
and veered to the right, striking a curb. The Suzuki driver then
overcorrected to the left and struck the GMC before veering to
the right again, striking a curb, and entering a grass field.
The Suzuki then struck a sign which resulted in the death of the
front seat passenger. The driver and back passenger were transported
to Ben Taub General Hospital with serious injuries. The driver
of
the GMC advised he and the driver of the Suzuki were 'kinda racing,'
but he was released after the Harris County District Attorney's
office advised investigating officers to do so.
The investigation is continuing.
