May 25, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 5100 block of the North Freeway service road about 1 p.m. on Wednesday (May 24).

The identity of the female victim, 67, is being withheld pending notification to her family by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant R. Gonzales and Officers T. Nguyen and R. Kessler reported:

A black 1997 Acura was northbound in the 5100 block of the North Freeway service road when the driver attempted to change lanes to enter the freeway main lanes. Initially, the driver did not see the vehicle in the lane next to her, but when she did, she attempted to return to her lane. The driver overcorrected, drove over the curb then struck a picket fence. A piece of the fence penetrated the driver's side door which then struck the female driver on her left side. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
