Update on Incident at 8100 Gulf Freeway

March 19, 2006 -- A suspect has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of a man at 8100 Gulf Freeway about 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2006.

The suspect, Gary Wayne Weaver (w/m, DOB: 01-07-79), has been charged with capital murder in the 182nd State District Court. A photo of the suspect is attached to this news release.

The victim, Ramesh Cherukumalli, 32, of 7905 South Main suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Officer S. R. Straughter reported:

At approximately 9 a.m., a witness contacted police after hearing several gunshots near Sims Bayou on the Gulf Freeway near Broadway. An officer responded to the area but was unable to locate anything at that time. At approximately 3 p.m., police received a call after an individual found the victim lying underneath the bridge. At the time of the shooting, a witness observed what appeared to be a silver/gray, four-door Honda Accord leaving that same location.
