Update on Incident at 2500 Woodland Park Drive
June 2, 2006 -- Charges have
been filed against a suspect wounded by a Houston police officer
after he pointed a pistol at three Houston police officers in
the 2500 block of Woodland Park Drive about 6:30 a.m. on June
1.
The suspect, Eric William Goodman (w/m, DOB 9/2/59),
was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in stable condition
after receiving a single gunshot wound to his stomach. He has
been charged with aggravated assault of a public servant in the
180th State District Court. The officer who discharged his weapon,
M.J. Hightower of the Westside Patrol Division, was sworn in as
an officer in March 1982. There were no other injuries.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants D.A. Ferguson
and B.C. McDaniel reported:
Officers were dispatched to a disturbance call
involving a man with a gun at 2500 Woodland Park Drive. Upon arrival,
responding officers observed Goodman yelling at a female and observed
a pistol in his waistband. Goodman began moving the pistol up
and down with his right hand, and when ordered to show his hands,
he instead turned around and began pointing his pistol at officers.
Officer Hightower fired his weapon, striking Goodman. Goodman's
semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.
As is customary in officer-involved shootings
in the city limits, the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions
and the Harris County District Attorney's office are investigating
the case.
