Traffic Incident at 1400 South Post Oak Lane

December 5, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 1400 block of South Post Oak Lane about 5:35 p.m. on Monday (December 4).

The male victim was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced
dead. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant W.R. Cumbess and Officers R. Kessler and M. Lowder reported:

An HPD officer, working an extra job at 1415 South Post Oak Lane, stopped traffic north and south bound to allow a vehicle to exit from a private parking lot. After ensuring that all vehicles were stopped, the officer instructed the driver of the vehicle leaving the parking lot to exit. The officer saw an SUV traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and had to quickly move to avoid being struck by the vehicle. That SUV then struck the vehicle exiting from the parking lot, killing the driver.

The investigation is continuing.
