Update on Incident at 7700 Southbank
May 21, 2005 -- Houston police
officers and officers from the multi-jurisdictional Gulf Coast
Violent Offenders Task Force have arrested the suspect charged
in the fatal shooting of a man at 7700 Southbank on Monday, May
16, 2005, about 10:10 a.m.
The suspect, Joseph
R. Grant Jr. (b/m DOB: 3-8-72) charged with murder in the
262nd State District Court and wanted on a parole violation, was
arrested as a result of a traffic stop initiated by HPD and task
force officers.
HPD Homicide Division Officers D. Vasquez and
M. Sosa reported:
A female witness offered to give the victim,
Garon Dewayne Mahon, 27, of 813 Waverly, a ride to work. Grant,
who is the witnesses' ex-boyfriend, intentionally blocked the
witnesses' vehicle, exited his vehicle and confronted Mahon.
Mahon, who was a passenger in the witnesses'
vehicle, exited the vehicle and a verbal altercation between Mahon
and Grant ensued. Grant fired several gunshots at Mahon, striking
him in the chest. Grant returned to his vehicle, a blue Pontiac
Grand Prix, and fled the area.
The witness drove Mahon to 6900 Martin Luther
King and called 911. He was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital
where he was pronounced dead.
