Houston Police Observe National Police Week
May 16, 2005 -- The Houston
Police Department will observe National Police Week beginning
Monday, May 16 through Friday, May 20, 2005 with activities that
include a promotion and awards ceremony, A Day of Prayer ceremony
an annual Memorial Service.
- On Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 2 p.m. the Houston
Police Department will hold a Promotion and Awards ceremony in
the gymnasium at the HPD Police Academy, 17000 Aldine-Westfield.
The ceremony will feature the reading of the Mayor's Proclamation
as well as special award presentations for Manager of the Year,
Civilian Manager of the Year, Officer of the Year and Civilian
Employee of the Year, just to mention a few.
- On Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 10 a.m. the Ministers
Against Crime will hold its' Day of Prayer at the Houston Police
Department Administration Building, 1200 Travis. Houston area
clergy will attend this event to reinforce the partnership that
exists between the community and the department.
- The Annual Police Memorial Service will be
held on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 7:15 p.m. at the Houston Police
Officers Memorial site to honor those officers who have given
their lives in the line of duty. A procession down Memorial Drive
will begin at 7 p.m. A candlelight vigil will include the placing
of a wreath on the memorial, a roll call of deceased officers,
a 21-gun salute, the playing of TAPS and a missing man fly-over
by the HPD Helicopters.
The purpose of this observance is to increase
the public's awareness of the role of police officers. It is during
this week that we remember and honor those who have given the
ultimate sacrifice of their lives so that we can live in safety
and peace.
