Traffic Incident at 12400 South Post Oak

February 14, 2005 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 12400 South Post Oak Road about 10:20 a.m. today (Feb. 14).

The deceased motorist was identified as Joseph Barthen, 64, of 6220 Alder.

HPD Traffic Division Sergeant J.T. Roberts and Officer S. Holmes reported:

Witnesses and evidence indicate that Mr. Barthen was driving a red Toyota Celica southbound on South Post Oak when his vehicle crossed the median into the northbound lanes. The Toyota collided head-on with a white Dodge van. Barthen was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in good condition. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

At this time, it is unknown what caused Barthen to lose control of the vehicle, but investigators believe a health condition might have contributed to the incident.
