Incident at 11606 Courtshire
April 7, 2005 -- Houston police
are investigating the death of a child at 11606 Courtshire about
3:05 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2005.
The victim is identified as James Dalton Powell,
20 months, of 11606 Courtshire. The boy suffered various trauma
to his body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Newcomb and
Officer T. Huynh reported:
Houston police officers received a call to 11618
Courtshire regarding a person down. When the officers arrived,
they found Theresa Ann Blount (w/f, DOB: 8-22-68) carrying the
victim in the middle of the street and screaming for help. There
were signs of trauma visible on the baby's body. Paramedics arrived
at the location and it was determined that boy was dead prior
to the arrival of police and paramedics.
The boy was under the care of Blount for several
hours prior to the call for police assistance. He had been transported
from the Livingston, Texas, area prior to the reporting of the
incident.
A joint investigation of the incident by the
Houston Police Department Homicide Division and the Polk County
Sheriff's office was initiated. The Texas Department of Childrens'
Protective Services was also notified. The investigation is continuing
in Houston and Polk County. There have been discrepancies found
in some of the statements made by the witnesses in both places.
Blount remains in custody at this time.
The baby was transported to the Harris County
Medical Examiner's Office where the cause of death will be determined
by an autopsy.
