Case Study Exerpt -- Sustainable design creates a better learning environment. In schools, improved natural day lighting increases reading test scores by 5%. One can conclude that, similar to schools, reading comprehension is improved in libraries with increased day lighting. Increased energy efficiency helps offset cuts in funding and rising utility costs. Use of durable, sustainable materials decreases facility maintenance costs and improves public perception. The LEED certification process for this project was completed without a significant cost increase to the construction budget.
