Food Bank PhotoU.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) Awards: Childhood Obesity Prevention Recognition Award

In 2018, the Houston Health Department received a 2nd place prize of $25,000 to expand its existing Get Moving Houston Farmers Market Program. The mission of the Get Moving Houston Farmers Market Program is to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to communities with limited access to grocery stores and other fresh food retail outlets. In 2017 alone, the Get Moving Houston Farmers Market Program hosted 58 markets at six low-income locations, selling 124,989 pounds of produce worth $114,052 to 3,886 customers. With the $25,000 received from the U.S. Conference of Mayors in partnership with the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America, the Houston Health Department was ble to expand the Program to include neighborhoods that are a part of the Complete Communities initiative. Expanding the program will allow for more community engagement, especially with underserved children and their families. Moreover, it will help to improve the health of Houstonians most at risk for overweight/obesity and chronic disease.
