LOCATION: The neighborhood is roughly about eight square miles bounded by Breaswood on the north, South Main Street on the south, Braewick ditch on the east and U.S 59 on the west of the neighborhood.
COMMUNITY DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY: Brays Oaks was originally part of oil tycoon Walter Fondren's ranch. Developers turned the undeveloped land into a new attractive location for young professionals. The area became one of Houston's most accessible and popular communities with a mixture of families, culture and commercial businesses. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a mixture of apartment complexes sprang up beside residential subdivisions which resulted in more commercial businesses and restaurants moving into the Community. However, by the mid 1980's, the real estate market began to suffer from the Houston oil bust. Property values declined and many of the apartment complexes deteriorated as ownership and management changed frequently. Turnover in the residential areas also led to merchants leaving the area and retail spaces remaining vacant.
The Community fought back to improve the area. One of the most important projects was the effort to have the Texas legislature create a management district for the area. Members of the Community, including officers of the Super Neighborhood, met with local businesses to get the required petition signatures for the creation of a management district and testified before the Texas legislature in favor of the management district. In June 2005 the Texas legislature voted to create the Brays Oaks Management District which has become a major force in the ongoing improvement of the Community. The name of the area changed to Brays Oaks. The Brays Oaks Super Neighborhood is included in the boundaries of the Brays Oaks Management District. Today, the Brays Oaks Community is one of the most diverse areas in Houston.
The Brays Oaks Super Neighborhood is actively engaged in the ongoing improvement of the entire Brays Oaks Community. Guest speakers at our monthly meetings include many of our local and state elected officials who provide information about what is occurring in our local and state governments and our attendees can discuss their issues and concerns with our guest speakers. Representatives of our elected officials provide updates and listen to the concerns raised by the attendees. Other organizations attend our meetings to obtain information and to provide information about their activities, meetings and projects to the attendees. The Brays Oaks Super Neighborhood also is an advocate on important issues which affect the quality of life in our Community, including providing our support and advocacy when other organizations come to us for assistance.
