“I RECYCLE FOR HOUSTON” CREATIVE TRUCK ARTWORK COMPETITION

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department will partner with Houston ISD
for a creative artwork competition to promote sustainability


HOUSTON – Thursday, January 26, 2023, The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department and Houston Independent School District are seeking unique recycling artwork from students to participate in the inaugural partnership truck art contest. The winning artwork will be featured on the City of Houston Recycling collection trucks promoting sustainability through recycling.

This year's theme is “I RECYCLE FOR HOUSTON.” HISD students between K to 12 grades can submit original artwork inspired by the contest theme. Artwork will be judged by age groups, with prizes awarded to winners in each category. The four categories will include the following:

  • Category 1: Grades k-5 (2 winners)
  • Category 2: Grades 6-8 (2 winners)
  • Category 3: Grades 9-12 (2 winners)
  • Category 4: Special Education (2 winners)

“This is more than just an art competition,” SWMD Director Mark Wilfalk said. “Art is not only drawing, coloring, & cutting. It is a tool for creative expression, healing, and change. Recycling is more than what meets the eye. It's about what motivates you to be the change in your home, neighborhood, and in your classroom.” This new educational competition is for all ages to encourage positive change through the eyes of our youth for a better future.

Students can submit their artwork and entry form at www.swmdart.com or by mail without folding it to SWM Art Contest 2023, Attn: Truck Art Contest, 611 Walker St. #1230, Houston, TX 77002. All submissions must be received or postmarked by Tuesday, February 28, 2023. After preliminary judging, the finalists' artwork will be displayed online, and open to the public for voting. All winners will receive a framed copy of their artwork and a certificate at the awards ceremony during Earth Week on April 19, 2023.
