Incident at 4935 West Orem
April 26, 2005 -- Charges are
pending against a suspect who attempted to run over Houston police
officers several times at 4935 West Orem about 8 p.m. on Monday
(Apr. 25).
The suspect, Marlon Rainford (b/m, DOB 4-30-86),
was treated and released from Ben Taub General Hospital after
officers were forced to use pepper spray and tasers to gain control
of him. He is in custody and will be charged with aggravated assault
on a police officer.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. Grysen and
Officer K. Carr reported:
Officers responded to a call at an auto repair
shop at 4935 West Orem regarding a suspicious person with a knife
taking a vehicle. Responding officers became involved in a short
pursuit with the suspect up and down West Orem before the suspect
returned to the business and pulled into a repair stall. At that
time, officers parked behind the vehicle. The suspect put his
vehicle in reverse and rammed a patrol vehicle several times and
damaged the building. The suspect forced his car around the patrol
vehicle. As he continued to accelerate, almost running over an
officer, another officer fired several shots at the suspect's
vehicle's tires in order to disable the vehicle and protect his
partner and several civilians in the area. Additional officers
arrived and blocked the exit from the business. The suspect managed
to drive recklessly around the repair shop several times more,
crashing into several parked vehicles. The suspect also chased
responding officers with his vehicle, attempting to run the officers
over. Eventually, the suspect's vehicle's tires were successfully
shot and deflated. Officers surrounded the vehicle when it stalled
and became disabled. Officers attempted to gain compliance from
the suspect and were forced to discharge tasers at him. The suspect
continued to struggle with several officers who were forced to
use pepper spray, expandable batons and tasers to gain control
of him and place him into custody.
As is customary in officer-involved shootings
in the city limits, the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions
and the Harris County District Attorney's office are investigating
the incident.
