2nd Update: Suspect Arrested, Charged in 2019 Fatal Shooting at 11246 Hendon Lane
September 9, 2020 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of two men at 11246 Hendon Lane about 2:30 a.m. on May 27, 2019.
The suspect, Michael Brown (b/m, 28), is charged with capital murder in the 183rd State District Court for his role in the killing of Travis Cary, 52, of the above address. A booking photo of Brown is attached to this news release.
A second male, Darius Keener, 20, was shot during the incident and pronounced deceased at the scene.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Horn and Detective K. McDonald reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the residence at the above address and found Messrs. Cary and Keener with gunshot wounds lying on the ground near the front porch area. Paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the men deceased.
Further investigation determined Cary was talking with an unknown female on his front porch for several minutes. She then left. Moments later, two unknown black males approached Cary while he was still on his porch. Both males fought with Cary and, during the fight, Cary and one of the suspects (Keener) were shot. The surviving suspect ran toward a newer model, silver Nissan Murano or Rogue parked nearby on Leawood and fled the scene. The vehicle was last seen traveling northbound on Leawood.
In July 2019, further investigation identified Brown as a person of interest who investigators believed had direct knowledge of what occurred in the incident.
On Tuesday (Sept. 8), Brown was arrested without incident and subsequently charged in the case.
