Investigation into Incident at 6531 Capridge Drive
May 26, 2020 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed male suspect by HPD officers at 6531 Capridge Drive about 1:20 a.m. on Monday (May 25).
The suspect, Joe Louis Castillanos, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers who discharged their weapons, N. Faiura, T. Henson and M. Macuga, were not injured in this incident. Officer Faiura was sworn in as an HPD officer in May 2018. Officers T. Henson and M. Macuga were sworn in as HPD officers in May 2019. All three are assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Detectives I. Ulloa, R. Lujan, M. Resnick, S. Martinez and G. Rodgers reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a suicide threat with a weapon/welfare check call at the above address. According to the caller, her husband, Castillanos, was armed with a gun, was highly emotional, and had just discharged the weapon.
Upon arrival, the officers observed Castillanos walking eastbound on the sidewalk in the 6500 block of Capridge Drive with a semi-automatic handgun in his right hand. Officers gave him numerous verbal commands to drop the weapon, which Castillanos ignored and instead fired a shot into the ground. Castillanos then turned towards the officers and raised the gun in their direction. The three officers, fearing for their lives and the lives of their fellow officers, discharged their duty weapons, striking Castillanos.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents within the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
